Also beat Super Mario 3D Land! Clocked in 3:44 for W1-8.
Had a blast with this one. It both is and isn't a neat prototype to 3D World. That one is clearly better in every area and gets far tougher, but it was totally worth running through 3D Land finally and it has its own levels and ideas. The controls were a little weird though, the momentum felt a bit off sometimes and I would get surprised at missing some jumps, etc. But that could be because I'm coming off a bunch of other 3D Mario's. I'm pretty sure 3D World controls better though.
I really love how the 3D line has callbacks to SMB1 and the others with certain aesthetics, music, etc. But it's a completely new spin on the formula with the isometric perspective.
I may or may not continue into the Special World's, which looks like the whole game over again but remixed in a Dark World or SMB2(J) World A-D kind of way. Maybe someone here can weigh in on all this extra content? Perhaps this is where the game gets really tough, but I'm not sure I'm interested in that since I didn't always love the controls. I'm pretty satisfied with what I played and loved it though. But for now, I'm a little more interested in hitting up the 3DS version of Donkey Kong Country Returns.

Nice beat Xeogred, I'm glad you enjoyed 3D Land, despite it being a handheld entry. Did you ever play through Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker? I'm sorely behind on playing 3D World. I do own the game and a Wii U, just so many games, so little time, that kinda thing. Next year hopefully.

I like how he pops up in some of the other Mario games now. Wait a second, pretty sure he was in Galaxy... okay yeah a Wiki confirms he first appeared there. I was getting confused since that predates his actual game and all.
So I beat Special World 1 in 3D Land and you unlock Luigi! Who jumps higher as usual and I like that a lot in this case. Maybe I'll keep chipping away at it. The remixed levels are pretty awesome so far.
Also turns out I don't have enough "blocks" for DKCR, so I finally ordered another SD card to throw in there. I think the stock in an XL is 2-4GB, so the supported 32GB should be good for years to come.

I thought Captain Toad was great. Your mileage may vary, of course, but I loved the sort of exploration on tap here.
I'm not a fan of DKCR, honestly, although I might like the patched Wii version better. It runs smoother at higher resolution, and has no waggle.

Overall, this is a 6-7/10 for me. Not bad but only really recommended for fans of the genre.
All the reviews online made this game sound amazing but I had some weird feeling like I didn't want to play it. Your review makes me think I was onto something.

It definitely has some cool ideas. The Link's Awakening-esque overworld, the final level being available from the start but is so challenging, you should complete all the levels to get those additional hit points for the final stage.
But yeah, I wonder if it really is the negativity I see around the Unity engine. Something about it looked and felt off a lot of the time. If you haven't played DKCR and Tropical Freeze, those are way better options.

I hate how folks rag so hard on the Unity engine. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it! The problem is people that use it that suck at making games, not the engine itself.
(Notable Unity games: Cuphead, Pillars of Eternity, Hollow Knight, and Ori and the Blind Forest.)

I picked up my run of Marvel's Spider-Man (PS4) again a week or so ago and knocked it out today. The story/characters ultimately carried me through this one and thankfully it's not a monstrously huge open world game. But yeah, even so, for as good as the swinging is, the game does get pretty repetitive after awhile. There's these two goofy hacking minigame like puzzles you have to do a lot throughout the game which gets old, the MJ stealth sections are kind of bland, and the combat is in the Arkham Asylum / Assassin's Creed mold which I'm not a huge fan of. But story/character wise, this reminded me of how I always liked Spider-Man the most next to Batman growing up and I felt like they really nailed Peter's personality here, along with the villains. Great writing, story, emotional beats, humor, and visually one of the best looking things I've seen this gen. Overall, pretty decent and it might be something you could kind of compare to Sucker Punch's Infamous games.
I actually think this means I've covered the big Sony open world games this gen. Spider-Man, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Ghost of Tsushima, and maybe Death Stranding counts. Actually I'll say it does, even if that one got a PC port, because Horizon did too.
For my personal tastes, I'd probably rank them like this:
1. Ghost of Tsushima 2. Death Stranding 3. Marvel's Spider-Man 4. Horizon: Zero Dawn (honestly I flushed it after about 5 hours, so it's barely even worth ranking for me)
