I think the key to enjoying that game is to treat it much like what it mostly is: a brawler. A brawler that crawled during boss battles. I've never played Muramasa, but I've got the Rebirth version on Vita as well. Vanillaware games I've played (due to the enticing graphics) and dropped (due to the awfully repetitive gameplay): Dragon's CrownGrand Knights HistoryKumatanchiOdin SpherePrincess CrownI've owned a legit copy of GrimGrimoire on PS2 since 2007, have never cracked the seal. I never read anyone talk about that game though.

I made it past the prologue in 13 Sentinels last night and then the power went out. So I just went to sleep. Maybe I will get to play it longer tonight. There seem to be two gameplay styles , an overhead mecha strategy game and then a graphic/text adventure. It is too early to tell how well the mecha sections are because I just played the "select attack" tutorial opening. The storyline section has a nice setting though.

I need to play the Saturn English translation of Sakura Wars soon.
I forgot to say about 13 Sentinels though, the adventure portion of the game has it where you can run around to talk and interact with objects rather than just going through text so I think it will have wider appeal to people that way combined with the pretty cool visuals. So it still has the Princess Crown style to it.

" Review: 'Crash Bandicoot 4' is hard, but it'll cheer you up ..."
" Crash Bandicoot 4 is familiar and f**cking hard, with plenty of new features | Hands-on preview " " Is Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time TOO HARD?" " Crash Bandicoot 4 is a HARD GAME..."
Crash 4 is everything I wanted. A throwback sequel to the original trilogy with enough fresh pizazz to make it interesting too, the new masks/abilities are awesome. Dimensional platform warping, time manipulation, gravity changing... everything you'd want in balls to the wall platformers. And yep, it's freaking tough. I caught the end of some streamer doing a long session the other night, he had 375 deaths.
I wish Nintendo would make more 3D World's, since that and Crash seem so alike in awesome ways to me. These are pure linear "obstacle course" 3D platformers and totally my thing.

pure linear "obstacle course" 3D platformers I much prefer that over: "Here's a big open area, now go find all the hidden collectables."

I think it depends on how many hidden collectibles there are. I'm actually okay with some degree of them - I like poking around interesting maps for stuff. But it has to be a sort of Super Mario 64 or Super Mario Odyssey approach (or even recently, Jak & Daxter), as opposed to the Rare "throw the kitchen sink at them" approach as seen in Donkey Kong 64.
But yes, typically, I cringe at "open-world", because that usually doesn't have anything interesting going on. It's much easier to craft a compelling linear stage.

Intelligent game designers use optional hidden collectables, to encourage players to explore out of the way areas, while offering a concrete goal (exit) to finish the actual level. That's good game design.
Less savvy game designers force the player to meticulously wander a level, searching for required collectables, with X amount necessary to unlock progress to the next stage. That's shit tier game design.

DK64 has to be one of the worst 3D platformers ever. Never been huge on Banjo either. Yeah, I'm pretty tired of the level gating a lot of this genre does sometimes. Like I've been saying lately, just give me a simple SMB3 styled map like Galaxy 2 and 3D World and let me get right to the levels.
Anyways, I don't recall any of you actually liking Crash much and if my memory is right, well I'm not sure if 4 is going to change any minds. But the new abilities and characters are a nice twist on the format, so maybe some new fans would dig it.

Crash is a'ight, but not really my jam. Not sure why - on paper, it should be.
I actually put 30 hours into DK64. I like a lot about it, but Rare just went overboard with the collectibles. Honestly, the biggest mistake they made was the stupid color-coded bananas that only certain Kongs could pick up. So frustrating and unnecessary.
