I guess Metroidvanias just aren't something I have the patience for unless they're S tier. The games I gave up on with Metroidvania elements in them were Hollow Knight and Wonderboy and The Dragon's Trap, both for Nintendo Switch, and Monster World IV for the Sega Genesis. To my credit, though, I did complete Shantae: Risky's Revenge from the Nintendo DSi e-shop, thoroughly enjoying every minute of it. Of those four, the only one I've played (and finished) is MWIV. If you want S-tier "Metroidvania" you should be playing Metroid games or Igavania-styled Castlevanias. Beyond those gold standards, you get into murky waters with occasional brilliance but mostly wannabes.

I can see where that would happen with those, though. Dragon's Trap can occasionally be obtuse. Monster World IV can be less so, but it still is at times. While they have Metroidvania elements, I just don't typically think of them like I do the Metroid or Igavanias. Hollow Knight will just straight up kick your butt.

I remember the gaming media losing their minds over those two Switch titles when they came out. It made me suspect something was the matter with me for not enjoying them as much. I haven't gotten into any of the DS Castlevania's, although I spent a lot of quality time with Symphony of the Night before getting stuck on the upside-down castle. I've beaten every 2D Metroid game ever except for Metroid 2 on the Gameboy. Wasn't there a remake of Metroid 2 on the 3DS? How was it?

My wife and me put about three hours into this today, via split-screen co-op. As far as Diablo-alikes go, this one's not too bad. The original game came out in 2006 (this port is from 2018), and it does feel like it's from that era. But yeah, it's Diablo in Greece so far. I will say the menus are really well designed (and they should be, you spend half the game in them). And the way the co-op is done, either player can do whatever they want, whenever they want, and not impact or impede the other. You can practically play the game apart from one-another if desired. The developers got the loot-drip-feed working well here too. My only real complaint is this game is cake easy thus far. And you can't choose a higher difficulty than Normal until after you have beaten the game. Maybe it'll become more challenging later on, hopefully. For now it's just killin' 'n' lootin' with zero strategy.

Those click-click hack and slash Diablo style games are always a good time. I approve.

Those click-click hack and slash Diablo style games are always a good time. I approve. What's interesting about Titan Quest, is you don't manually push attack attack attack with a button. You hold down the attack button and your character automatically attacks the nearest enemy, after killing them then moves to the next, and repeats the process. This kind of puts the player in a passive role, watching their character automatically maraud mobs of enemies. However there's still a strategic aspect, because you have to watch your character's health and stay on top of that, and also deploy manual magic spells when appropriate, or retreat and regroup. It does take some getting used to do, in that you aren't manually targeting and directly attacking enemies in a granular manner. That said, there may be a menu option that changes this.

Is this the biggest Western marketing push any of them have ever had? In the west I believe so. SMT5 is very present consistently on gaming blogs/news sites I read, and other gaming forums I visit. Given that Sega will be publishing the game (in the USA - Atlus publishing in Japan), I don't expect SMT5 to remain a Switch exclusive for long. The game uses the Unreal Engine 4, meaning porting to other platforms is not a difficult affair. I'm expecting a deluxe version of SMT5 to eventually release for PC and PS4 at the least, probably in 2022.

Persona 5 came out in 2016, Royal edition in 2019 (2020 worldwide), despite Sega pushing on PC a bit more thesedays and getting Persona 4 on there, they only put that weird Persona 5 Strikers game up for now when everyone obviously wants 5 there too. Everything Atlus related I've seen, seems inconsistent and weird when it comes to exclusivity.
Sounds like Persona 5 has some kind of custom engine though, so maybe you're onto something with SMT5 being Unreal Engine 4. Guess it would be interesting if we knew where SMT3 HD did best across the Switch, PS4, or PC.
Either way, SMT must destroy Persona. ATTACK!!!
