I've had that happen a few times, too - I think the drivers have various quotas to make, and will often scan an item as "delivered" to hit that, then do it the next day. It's weird.

Yep, I use to have this happen all of the time with UPS. I use to manage a logistics department and that sort of thing would drive me nuts with customers and the sales team.
So I messaged the seller for Big Red One on eBay and they told me to go down to my local Post Office with the tracking number. I guess they have a GPS stamp of where it was scanned as delivered. So it turns out that it was in fact delivered to the wrong house. Apparently in this situation the supervisor drives out to where the package was delivered, knocks on their door and asks for the package LOL. Whoever it was still had it, and the supervisor then delivered it to my mailbox. So all is well in the end.
So I mentioned that in the past I've had the tracking show something was delivered but then it arrived a day later. Perhaps in that case it was also delivered to the wrong address. But the recipient did the right thing and either brought it to my mailbox, the post office, or did what I usually do when I receive someone else's mail. I put it in my mail box with a sticky note or whatever that says "delivered to wrong address." Not sure why this person was holding on to it, perhaps they just forgot or was too busy or whatever. They didn't open it at least, so that's good.

There've been many times in the past few years, wherein tracking says the package was delivered to my address, but it wasn't. Then it shows up the next day. I think Sarge is right that drivers are lying to make false delivery promises in the system. Of course occasionally packages are delivered to the wrong address, but by and large I think drivers are scamming the system.

That's never happened to me and I order stuff all the time, so my guess is that it's in the work culture of certain companies. I've heard more than once that some companies in the US like UPS push impossible quotas so the drivers end up taking various shortcuts.

I was in logistics for a while, and yes, they do push impossible deadlines. A lot of the UPS drivers that I met were very disgruntled. I remember one location I was at was a very heavy route. The UPS truck would pull up in the morning and the driver wouldn't even be able to roll up his back door because it was so packed out. He would quickly drop just my air packages and then bolt away. He had to deliver all of his air packages by a certain time or he'd get reamed out. Then he would come back later in the day to deliver my ground packages. Be he was in such a rush, he would literally just throw my air out the back of the truck and then leave. I also oversaw the process for pickups at our clients' locations. UPS was often so frustrating. Pickups were constantly marked as "completed" when they weren't, and I would always have to explain this to the sales reps. "The pickup shows it was completed, why does the tracking number show it wasn't shipped?" It's because a driver would scan the pickup as completed when it actually wasn't. I've even had times when a client would state someone was at the front desk the entire time and no UPS truck ever came. For some locations I would need UPS to install a bar code inside the physical location, that the driver would have to scan in order to mark the pickup complete so they wouldn't be able to cheat it. They would also constantly mis-deliver things because they ignore suite numbers. I've had several UPS drivers tell me that they ignore suite numbers and just go to the address and drop the package at the first door they see.
Speaking of a heavily packed out UPS truck and the drivers being in a hurry... So many times I've seen the driver standing on a small bubble envelope in the back of the truck. I would think, "Ooooohhhhh, THAT'S how my games get broken during shipping!"
My Big Red One package though was USPS, and it was misdelivered because the young people in the work force today put no effort into anything. They told me there's a new courier training on my route and that person seems to be awful. I mean, when you scan a USPS package to deliver it, the address is RIGHT THERE. So you just have to really not be paying any attention at all in order to deliver it at the wrong house. They also mentioned at the Post Office that the new courier takes a long time to complete the route, so it's not like they misdelivered it because they were in a hurry. They just weren't paying any attention to what they were doing. Which is kinda scary when you consider this person is behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. It also really irks me when a package goes to one of my neighbors because I think, "What if I ordered something embarrassing?"

Yeah, I have no doubts that some of the pencil-pushers have unreasonable expectations. There's a balance to be found there - you want folks working and productive, but not overkill, but you also don't want them in that latter example where they keep their employment despite just not caring.

I think the quality of the delivery service, in the USA, does depend on the region. In general where I live, UPS does very well, hardly pulling any shenanigans. Fed Ex is a mixed bag, usually they do okay. But USPS sucks in my town. They have a really high turnover rate as I see new drivers all the time. They do the thing were a package is marked completed, even though half the items aren't there, then those items show up the next day or two later. Deliver my stuff to the wrong address, even though I've got loads of address signs leading to my house. Leave packages on the stairs where they can get rained on, instead of walking the two extra steps to put them under the covered porch. Sometimes not bother to deliver the large packages that don't fit in (extra large) mailbox, and instead leave them sitting on top of the mailbox by the road, where they can get stolen or rained on. Or throw packages on the grass in front of the house, because they're afraid to get out of the car, because our super friendly - obviously not aggressive - American bulldog is sitting on the porch wagging its tail. Just a complete lack of give a fuck in general. That's USPS around here.

I'm not sure who delivers for Amazon Prime here, I think it may be Canada Post, but they're pretty great for me. Zero issues. In Montreal, most actual post offices are gone, but they have postal counters in big chain drugstores for some reason. So worse case scenario, if I miss a delivery, I might have to pick it up at a nearby drugstore, which is never more than a few streets away (usually they just leave it out of sight instead near my door). But UPS doesn't do that - they hold these types of packages in their own little stores, which are few and far between. Once, years ago, I had to take two buses on an hour and a half-long roundtrip just to pick up a package they claimed they had attempted to deliver three times, even though I had been home the entire time, awake and without earphones. I refused to order from any site that used UPS after that.

Holy freaking crap, there's seriously some kind of conspiracy against me!
In addition to the three mishaps mentioned above, I have two more to add! I ordered a CD from Amazon. Some White Stripes album, I guess it's out of print. I found a copy, suppose to be new, ships from Amazon but sold by some third party seller. I get it in, and it's shrink wrapped, but the material of the plastic looks different than usual. So I open it up, and there's the wrong CD instead. Brian Setzer's Christmas album LOL. Now I'm looking through my emails from today and I have one from eBay saying something was delivered today but it's not here! So I guess I have to go down to the Post Office again and see where it is. This is getting kind of annoying. Is the universe trying to tell me something?

This all sounds crazy man, but I have to ask, do you have Prime? I feel like living in the midwest here I kind of sidestep shipping woes others have to deal with in the states. Just assuming it's easy mode getting so much stuff here in the central areas. But yeah I have heard horror stories from Amazon in other places. It's pretty weird, I've been using them for years now with really good service. (Granted Prime being a whopping $139 now is kind of pushing my patience to stick with it, but eh yeah it probably pays for itself with how much I use it).
So if you don't have Prime, I wonder if you and others get put on some low tier list where not as much effort and protocol is put into things otherwise. Just me being pessimistic though.
