I'm a no-good bum so I still haven't started playing Cannon Spike, but I'm intrigued by that submarine game with the weird title I can't remember and am looking forward to the review.

I'm feeling iffy about jumping back into Soul Reaver. Might give some other games a look this weekend. Work has been holding me back preventing me from doing much on the weekdays, so I haven't been gaming a ton lately.

Finally played a little Cannon Spike. Using redream, which was the highest-rated emulator on the site I used. Quite practical as it doesn't require BIOS files. This is the most arcadest game ever. I'm not good at it so far.

Cannon Spike is very arcade-influenced, I agree. There's a game on PS2 entitled The Red Star, it reminds me of Cannon Spike enough that I think of it as a spiritual successor.

Never heard of it. I agree it looks very similar to Cannon Spike, just slower apparently.

Gave Berserk a quick try. I could tell from the first boss battle that it's too rough for me. Almost feels like a beta version. I can't remember if Ex ever finished it, btw. I know Sarge did.

Gave Berserk a quick try. I could tell from the first boss battle that it's too rough for me. Almost feels like a beta version. I can't remember if Ex ever finished it, btw. I know Sarge did. I appreciate you giving the game a try, and offering another opinion. There's one boss battle in particular that almost made me quit the game. It was against this guy: Even on Normal difficulty he was damn near Demon's Souls level difficulty. The biggest problem really, was how awful the camera was in that battle. Anyway, no, I haven't finished Berserk yet. I think I only have 30 minutes left to go... a few boss fights, punctuated by a terrible reverse camera chase sequence with instant death traps everywhere. The game's just such a disappointing asinine experience, I lost all gusto. But it'd be dumb not to finish it at this point, so maybe tonight? I'm still playing Blue Submarine No.6 instead, which I've got 13 hours in at this point. I think I'm about 2/3rds of the way through it, but it's hard to be sure. The only walkthrough I can find for gauging progress, was written by a non-native English speaker, and it's hard to parse as a result. I will say this game's become quite challenging in its later missions. I'm at the point now where I have to customize the crap out of the submarine per mission, to meet technical criteria restrictions, and I rarely get exact search coordinates anymore. This extra layer of complexity does add to the realism of the experience though. Unfortunately the English fan translation is pretty rough, so I'm not exactly sure what's going on with the plot. But the game's translated well enough that it's functionally playable, thankfully. Here's a few more screenshots from my play thus far:

I played some of Marvel vs Capcom 2. Man there seems to be some balancing issues. My first team was Ryu + Wolverine + Strider. I'm decent with Ryu, but I couldn't get past the 4th stage. Wolverine, for how much people probably love Wolverine, seems slow and weak. Although, Wolverine is short, which I guess is a plus. Strider, on the other hand, is is quick and can really dish out the damage once you get the combos going.
So, next I tried Strider + Doctor Doom + Cable and ran right through the game--didn't lose a single match. In all my battles, I only lost a character in one battle (and it wasn't even the last battle.) Strider was my main since he is a fast in-your-face character, and I used Doom/Cable to spam range support attacks like there is no tomorrow. If the opponent ever got in close I'd have some fun with Strider, then send them across the field or fast teleport. Ya, Strider has a fast teleport, which seems kinda broken in conjunction with the Doom/Cable range spam.
Naturally this was the normal difficulty, so I'm sure I'd get annihilated on higher. I may play some more, but I'm interested in some of Ex's suggestions.

Oh, MvC2 has all sorts of busted characters. I find Ryu and Ken don't make the transition well at all - their movesets just don't match the game well. I do like Wolverine, but you have to use him in certain ways. He has two variants: the bone claw and regular version. If I remember right, bone claw is more powerful but less durable.
Cable is considered "God-tier" by the community. Doctor Doom and Strider are considered just below, at "High-tier". Both are really, really good if you know what you're doing.
Even if they're not as high on the tier list, I like to use Cyclops (high tier), Captain Commando (mid-high tier), and whoever I'm feeling like playing around with. Wolverine goes here a lot (mid tier), although throwing Iron Man in here makes things really powerful. My highest-scoring run I think used Cable, Iron Man, and Captain Commando, though.

Since January will be "Anime Adaptations", I decided to roll Blue Submarine No.6 into next month, because it'll fit that theme perfectly. Therefore tonight I finally bothered to finish: Sword of the Berserk Guts' Rage is a 3D slash 'em up, developed by Yuke's and published by Eidos Interactive in 2000 (released 1999 in Japan), for the SEGA Dreamcast. This is a licensed game based on the popular Berserk manga/anime franchise. The plot concerns a swordsman named Guts who is trying to save his beloved, and ends up embroiled in a battle with monsters as a result. (That's hardly the plot really, because the Berserk lore is massive, and this game is just a tiny snippet of the overall story.) Players will guide Guts through battles upon repetitive boring battles, using his massive seven foot long (surprisingly ineffective) claymore, along with other (somewhat useless) secondary weapons. Hope you like naked fairy boy butt, because you're going to see a LOT of it.
+Captures the vibe of the source material well.
+Numerous well crafted cutscenes, with above average voice acting, tell the tale sufficiently. +Some of the boss battles are impressive.
+You can chop dudes in half with Guts' claymore. +It's a short game.
-Absolutely awful game design from A to Z.
-Constantly spites the player with brutally unbalanced difficulty (on Normal anyway, I didn't try Easy).
-Terrible camera in general.
-Insta-death QTEs.
-Cutscenes don't support subtitles (pet peeve for me, because deaf gamers do exist). As a fan of the source material, this is a game I've wanted to beat for many years. On one hand, I'm glad I finally did so. On the other, this was four hours of my life I'm not getting back, spent on a shit-tier game. While this wasn't the worse licensed game I've ever played, it certainly didn't buck the trend of licensed games typically being lame potboiler. I don't think Yuke's had any business being the developer for this honestly. (Yuke's is best known for wrestling games.) What they made here is a pile of wonky sadism, which consistently disrespects its player's free time. (To that end, I'm mildly proud of managing to beat this one on Normal difficulty!) But as a fan of Berserk, I don't think this pile of crud does its license justice, at all. I can only hope that Yuke's later PS2 sequel is much improved. Behold, the true final boss... Ex's time to beat: 4 hours 10 minutes
Ex's rating: 4/10 -
I plan to beat two more games for this theme. They will be shorter than this one, and hopefully better.
