I'd highly recommend it. Great stage designs, classic 2D (okay 2.5D) gameplay, intuitive controls (uses d-pad and not thumbstick), cool power-up system, charming aesthetics. My only beef is that the "true" final boss & ending are hidden away behind collectathon bullshit.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (N64) is superior to Kirby's Return to Dream Land (Wii), no doubt there. Though I don't think Crystal Shards is the best 5th gen 3D platformer. Not in a world where the masterpiece Bubsy 3D exists.

Return to Dreamland is good, if short and safe. Kirby 64, while not my favorite 5th gen platformer, is still mighty fine gaming indeed.
A dark horse candidate for my favorite 5th gen 3D platformer is... Ape Escape. Yes, really, in a genre where the N64 dominated, the PSX has an awfully good one!

I agree Ape Escape for PS1 is a great 3D platformer. It's creative and fun, with unique controls. I enjoyed it enough to finish it. However, I've not played any of Ape Escape's sequels or gaidens, so it didn't make that big an impact on me apparently.

I played Kirby Crystal Shards at my cousin's house when he and I were kids. It wowed me. Having never played a Kirby game before, it seemed so cool how Kirby could absorb enemies' powers. I have the N64 cart in my collection now, but haven't prioritized playing it.
I played Ape Escape at the same cousin's house. It was fun to play and had impressive graphics for the time. The main thing I remember was that you absolutely needed the dual shock to play it. It wouldn't work with the non-analog controller.

I replayed it a year or two ago, and felt it really held up well. Definitely worth a go even now.

For the record I consider Super Mario 64 the best 5th gen platformer. I remember enjoying Crystal Shards when I beat it eons ago, but I hardly remember anything about it now. Conker’s Bad Fur Day had nice graphics for N64, but it was too brashly juvenile to hold my attention. I tried it again later with the Xbox remake, and the results were the same. For something different in the world of 5th gen 3D platformers, consider the habitually ignored Jumping Flash! series. These are esoteric and unique, but funner than one might expect. I've only finished the first game, but I've sampled the other two.

I want to give Banjo Tooie another shot someday and approach it more like a 3D Zelda, since it's so massive and pretty expansive gameplay wise. The first game is solid, but I think Super Mario 64 still blows Rare's N64 platformer offerings out of the water. The controls are just so much better. People love those Banjo games though and the 360 got some really nice remasters. I don't think anyone could pay me to play DK64 again. I played a lot of it when I was brutally sick with mono as a kid and nowadays just thinking about that game makes my head spin. I got kind of sick playing Kazooie sometimes too, something about their claustrophobic interiors/caves and stuff was nauseating. Never had that issue with SM64. Conker I'm probably never touching and must be best left in the past. Big furry tits and diahhrea mountain... I'm good lol. Jet Force Gemini is one I'd like to revisit. I never beat it because like a lot of Rare's platformers, I recall it overstayed its welcome and went on forever.
I wonder if Mega Man 64 is worth a look as a huge fan of the PSX original? Maybe has some minor differences or better draw distance? Hmm...

I've played some Jumping Flash, it's definitely a unique and interesting game. I just didn't like the FPS segments as much.

I put a ton of time into DK64, but yeah, couldn't do it today in full. I hated the color-coded bananas. Just terrible.
