Meanwhile, I'm over here not liking Contra becauee of the one hit kills, and those third person sections are terrible, but I'm the weirdo lol. At least in Castlevania you don't die from a single hit! Hah! I'm always a bit more partial to sci-fi/guns in old platformers. Metroid/Mega Man/Contra... but I love 16bit Castlevania. And Super Ghouls n' Ghosts.
Did you know in the Japanese version of Hard Corps you get a health bar and can take three hits? Something like that.
This discussion makes me want to hit up some NES stuff though, it's been a minute.

I don't mind one hit kills when everything else feels fair, but I also dislike the non-sidescrolling sections in Contra. And *some* knockback is common, but Castlevania takes it further than any game I can think of.

Oh, Castlevania can be cheap, no doubt. The final level with the giant bats on the bridge is bad in the first game. Still, I prefer it to Contra, even if they're really differently designed games.

Basically this thread has turned into this thread: hardcoreretrogaming.boards.net/thread/201/controversial-opinions-threadSo to bring us back to the original thread purpose, here's some literal kusoge: Toilet Kids for PCE circa 1992. This is a crappy shmup with a severe dookie fetish. "One night, while visiting the bathroom, the protagonist suddenly finds himself flushed down the toilet and transported to a mysterious realm filled with strange monsters. Piloting a flying vehicle, the protagonist is tasked to defeat the the inhabitants of the mysterious world and find a way to return home."www.giantbomb.com/toilet-kids/3030-37061/images/

Even though that game is probably garbage, I think it's pretty cool that there once was a time where a subsidiary of a huge corporation (Media Rings was part of Mitsubishi) put time and money in a game with a concept that boldly stupid and actually saw it through. You might think "crazy Japan" and leave it at that, but we had Boogerman around that time - gross out humor was big with kids, so business-wise, it actually makes some sense. Though I would've probably just made fun of the game if I'd known about it at 6 or 7.

Sorry, I guess I misinterpreted the point of this thread and caused the derailment. Anyone heard of Transformers Mystery of Convoy? It’s a Famicom only game where you play as some Transformer (I don’t have the manual) and you can only get hit once before you’re dead. I never made it past the first stage- the first screen besides. The cartridge was cheap, though!

Though I would've probably just made fun of the game if I'd known about it at 6 or 7. Toilet Games isn't terrible, it's an OK shmup mechanically. I said it's kusoge because kusoge loosely translates as "shitty game". Anyone heard of Transformers Mystery of Convoy? Unfortunately I have played that one. Reason being, back in 2009 I dated a girl who was a Transformers super fan. As a result we played every Transformers video game that was available at that time, including this awful turd. (She also caused me to have to play one of the worst board games I've ever played.) Yes Transformers Mystery of Convoy absolutely belongs in this thread.

^ Yes it's awful. I've beaten it though. The hit detection is atrocious and the level design is just vexing. I didn't want this to be an unpopular opinions thread or a thread about shovelware and licensed crap. Think more along the lines of shitty games by good/legendary developers. My OP was shitty, I edited it a bit. Here's a couple I've ranted about in the past. What's interesting about these is that they actually have decent sequels. Valkyrie no Bouken: Toki no Kagi DensetsuNamco's failed attempt at making a Zelda game. Interestingly it was released in 1986, just months after Zelda. I'd like to think they rushed this through production to cash in. It's sloppy, it's flickery, and the dungeons are poorly designed. Combat is sluggish and items break. There's a terrible password system that only retains some of your inventory. Oh, and it's a grindy game too. Just miserable in every way. Now, the sequel, Legend of Valkyrie, is more action-focused and is actually awesome. (However it's followed by Xandra no Daibouken which also seems shitty, though I haven't played it enough to earnestly include it in this thread). Mugen Senshi ValisOkay, so Valis on Famicom is like its own thing. If you play "Valis" on Genesis you'll have a different, better experience. This game sucks ass. It's ostensibly a nonlinear platformer... but instead of being a Metroidvania it's more like you just "warp" all over the place in completely inexplicable ways. Abysmal.

Ex You know what licensed boardgame is surprisingly good? Fast and the Furious. It's a collaborative multiplayer game where you're trying to destroy an enemy convoy within a set number of turns. I played it once last year with friends who're into boardgames, had a good time. Yeah Valis NES and that Valkyrie game suck.

Interesting that I ran through Castlevania last night, so now I can talk about the bat bridge! I've actually got a technique that mostly works well. Sometimes you want to bait that first bat, but the best way to handle the second one is to barrel forward, take a jump that just misses him when he charges you, and immediately jump again to cross the gap. It's a pretty tight window, but it works pretty consistently for me. It's generally pretty smooth sailing from there.
