It's unlikely the Famicom needs any introduction to active members of HRG. But for our voluminous lurking guests who may not know: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_Entertainment_SystemReal simple thread concept here. What Famicom (and sure Famicom Disk System too) games do you recommend? What's the best of the best out there? Especially stuff that never made it to NES? Any great sleepers that haven't been ROMhacked into English yet?
I shall be back later with my own rec's.

I'll be watching this thread closely, because yeah, Famicom exclusives are not my area of expertise. Castlevania III/Akumajou Densetsu is better on Famicom because of music and better balance with enemy damage, but that's hardly obscure knowledge haha

I don't even know where to start. I have hundreds of Fami carts. More Fami carts than NES carts at this point, really. When I think of stuff that's on the Fami but not the NES there's........ The disk system library, obviously. More primitive "black label" type games to be found. Nuts & Milk, Galaxian, F-1 Race, Mappy, Exerion, Formation Z, Field Combat, Warpman, Front Line, Battle City, etc. Of course the RPGs. Mother, Final Fantasy II/III, Chaos World, Dark Lord, Just Breed, Esper Dream I/II, Deep Dungeon series, Radia Senki, Sweet Home, Ys trilogy, Lagrange Point, and more. Some intriguing platformers never released in the US. Akumajou Special, Getsu Fuuma Den, Cocoron, Yume Penguin Monogatari, Bio-Miracle Bokutte Upa, etc. 8-bit VN adventures, many of which are fan-translated. Portopia being the most important. A comical number of unlocalized sports games. Baseball and golf are pretty well represented. A handful of good shmups that never left Japan. If you wanna get super nerdy there are all the mahjong and shogi games. Plus other things like are distinctly Japanese, like a pachinko simulation game. Honestly, tons of kusoge and bad games too. Best text-heavy game with no translation? Ginga no Sannin comes to mind. A must for fans of spacey anime.

Here's some Famicom games Ex recommends: Famicom Wars ( Advance Wars' grandpa) Gimmick! (amazing platformer, the Famicom version has superior audio)

Was going to roll around to this last night but had something else come up. Anyway, lots of great titles that didn't see a Western release. I'm sure I'll duplicate a bit here, so just chalk it up as another vote for a particular title. Crisis Force - A remarkably modern-feeling (for that time) shooter on NES. Konami really did have that NES hardware figured out. Moon Crystal - Very fun PoP-like that controls a bit better. Final Fantasy III - bonesnapdeez has probably played through more Famicom RPGs than me, but of the ones that I've played, FFIII still tops the list. Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-kun - Not Konami's most amazing game, but certainly a very solid effort. Akumajou Densetsu - Yes, we got this, but the game should definitely be experienced in its original form, if only for the soundtrack. Most tunes are better due to the VRC6. JaJaMaru Gekimaden: Maboroshi no Kinmajou - A Zelda-like that was a good bit of fun when I played through it a while back. Adventure Island IV - Changes the formula to exploratory platforming, and it's a great time. Gimmick! - Also got a European (actually, just Scandinavian?) release as Mr. Gimmick. Japanese version is the way to go, slick soundtrack and 60 Hz. Hebereke - Got a release as Ufouria, either are worth giving a go. There is a translation patch for the Japanese version. Wouldn't surprise me if there was a 60 Hz patch, and there's also a US prototype with a completely different map that I should try. Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu - Super cool arena fighter from Technos. Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru Gaiden - A slick game developed by Westone. Dragon Quest exploration with side-view battles that very much feel like Monster World. Mitsume Ga Tooru - Fantastic platformer from Natsume. Tenchi O Kurau 2 - AKA Destiny of an Emperor II. Haven't played through it, but enough to know it's at least as good as the original, and probably better. I'll keep adding as I think of stuff.

Honestly not sure what the best turn-based JRPG on the Fami is. Probably Dragon Quest III, which was of course localized. Final Fantasy III is great too, obviously. And I'm really partial to Mother. Inherent clunkiness aside, it's so charming and endearing.
As far as ARPGs go, nothing 8-bit can top Zelda 1 (not a "real" ARPG, I know.....) but Ys II on the Famicom is fantastic. If you're looking for side-scrolling Metroidvania stuff I'd recommend Cosmo Police Galivan and then Jikuu Yuuden: Debias. The latter takes awhile to warm up to, as it has the weird flipped B-jump/A-attack scheme, but is still pretty fun.
I emulated Moon Crystal ages ago and liked what I played. Then looked into getting an actual cart and suffered sticker shock. Might be a game I eventually buy a repro of; same goes for Magical Pop'n.

Dragon Quest IV is so much better than III, but they're not Famicom-exclusives so I think that's why Sarge didn't bring them up. Out of the fan translated ones, FFIII is probably the best I've played, too. Dark Lord is pretty solid. I like Glory of Heracles 2. The first one looks much more primitive than DQ1 somehow, but the second game is a pretty cool Mesopotomian DQ. Just Breed is really cool, too. I recommend it any Shining Force fan, and probably fans of Langrisser too since it has the General + troops system IIRC.

Yeah, I'm only listing exclusives (or PAL region in some cases). Dragon Warrior III/IV are probably the best RPGs on the system overall.

I'd argue Dragon Quest III and Final Fantasy III are the best RPGs on the system (though DQIV is great - I'm playing it right now, I bought a decently priced copy on eBay the other day - it's not as mechanically fun as III imo, Taloon segment aside). For me, the best 8 bit RPGs are FF3, DQ3, and Phantasy Star.
