Oof, that's quite an ask, since it's my favorite genre... Let's see. Not in any order, today, they'd be:
Final Fantasy VI Shining Force II Persona 3 Portable Etrian Odyssey III (speaking of exclusives!) Devil Survivor Overclocked

Oh, I'm aware of the SD2Vita, it's just that it won't work on a non-hacked system. The actual memory card slot is too small to make an adapter for a MicroSD. Also, those stupid Vita memory cards had quite the failure rate that increases as they get larger in capacity. (I've had one fail on me, by the way.)
I don't know that I'd call Majin that much a successor - yes, you have a companion, and there might be some smaller stylistic similarities, but in terms of gameplay it's much more regimented. You explore a massive world, but it's broken into smaller discrete areas that always have puzzles and an item or upgrade to find. So it's more Zelda-ish in that regard. There's also some stealth because your MC is quite weak compared to the Majin. I suppose that means it has more in common thematically with The Last Guardian, but it predates that game.
As far as Dragon Quest IX goes, I still liked it - it's like a 7 or 7.5 to me - but the inclusion of too many MMORPG elements drug it down for my tastes. I get that the game has insane longevity with the grottos though, so I do get its appeal, and it also sports a really robust job system, which I also like. I do wonder how much overlap there is between folks loving it and loving Final Fantasy V. (I think FFV is much worse, like a 5/10. Thoroughly meh for me.)

Not everyday Sarge drops a 5/10... brutal. My poor FF5.

I love Final Fantasy V, it's a 8 or 9 for me (VI will always be my favorite, though, I'm afraid). Such satisfying mechanics!

Final Fantasy VI Shining Force II Persona 3 Portable Etrian Odyssey III Devil Survivor Overclocked I don't think those are bad games at all, but I've only played two of them. I've beaten FF6 SNES and loved it. I put 10 hours into P3P and ended up hating it. The rest I'm open to playing eventually. But what that list tells me, is you and I have different JRPG tastes. That explains some things, like why you like DQ5 and DQ9 so much. For contrast these are my top 5 JRPGs: Final Fantasy XII (PS2)
Phantasy Star (SMS) Phantasy Star IV (GEN)
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (PS2) Vagrant Story (PS1) Sarge I didn't care for FF5 at all either. I beat it just because everybody praised it so highly back in the day. Just another case of forbidden fruit syndrome. Giving it a 5/10 is being generous.

Oh man, Nocturne is so good. I beat it six times in a row when the remaster came out to get all the endings lol. Still, P3 Portable really stuck with me since I love the plot of that game so much, as well as the soundtrack.
We do have different tastes, though, you're right - Final Fantasy XII is easily the worst in that series, to me haha. Cannot stand nearly anything about it if I'm honest. And I didn't play FFV until playing a fantranslation of the SNES game until like 2015, and I loved it. And I was a Sega Genesis kid, I didn't even get my SNES until like 2002 lol

I've almost written off Persona, just because I can never get into P4 that everyone loves and I far prefer SMT's aesthetic. But P3 does kind of interest me. Seems darker than P4-P5 too I think.
I guess I shouldn't ignore the first two either, since they look more like SMT games haha.
As for FF5, as I always say it's the GBA version that won me over with its excellent revised script and all. I do think some of the new Jobs were probably useless though, I was a little spread out in my Jobs usage. My plan is to play the SNES version next sometime with the GBA translation since that exists thankfully. Could be the best of both worlds and trim out some of the extra GBA stuff I might not really need.

The GBA version is better, I think, primarily for the improved script as you say, but I always like having more job options. Though yeah, the patch that puts the GBA translation into the SNES game is a thing. I think my favorite version is GBA with a fan patch to restore the music - the pixel remaster of it is cool, but a bit too slick for me (I feel similarly about the pixel remaster of VI, too - give me the GBA version with SNES music, thanks [which there's a fan patch for]).

Thing is, I get the appeal for FFV. I really do. It just didn't strike me in my critical weak spot. But FFVI, that's incredible stuff. GBA version apparently does bring improvements, and I do own it. And I remember that sound restoration hack for it, but don't remember if I actually tried it. Ex gon' be happy we got another Nocturne devotee. Another one I've got to roll around to eventually (again). I didn't care much for FFXII, either. It was like a 7/10 for me. It's good, but I have some of the same gripes about it as I do Xenoblade, but that game makes up for the MMO-style combat system with really cool exploration. But stylistically, FFXII is up my alley for sure.

Nocturne is probably the best SMT game, in many ways, really. Nothing else in the series nails the oppressive atmosphere like that game. I love it. But, Persona 3 FES came into my life at a low point and kept me entertained when I needed a distraction from some real shit, so I'll always have a soft spot for it. Portable was a huge improvement on it, though (not being able to control your party members sucks *cough* see also Dragon Warrior IV on NES lol).
