The main character is amazing.
I beat it on the PS3. It was... playable. That's how I'd probably describe Drakengard 3's awful budget too... the game was mostly functional. lol

I've seen it described as "Twin Peaks Silent Hill Shenmue Yakuza" (I'm probably forgetting some) and that sounds amazing. I know the shooting mediocre, you can see even see it in the videos, and I know you said you especially hated the driving. But yeah, I'd play that right away.
Now's probably the time to admit that I've never seen Twin Peaks. I've been aware of David Lynch by reputation forever, but I never really wanted to watch his stuff. I just might watch Twink Peaks now, but not right away, for sure.
Anything else like it?

Do I LIKE IT? I love it. It's a mystery horror on top of a slice of life comedy. Unintentionally hilarious. And it can get dead serious at the drop of a dime. I wish I could think of a movie/game comparison for you but yeah, Yakuza kind of fits, but it's so obvious that Deadly Premonition is maximum Twin Peaks and way more than something like Alan Wake.
Actually you saw Breaking Bad right? I'd compare the tone to that in ways, or Saul. Sometimes when it gets serious you can't just help but laugh at how ridiculous the situations and drama can be. Compared to most of Lynch's movies though, it's a lot more chill and goofy in a cool way.
Lynch and Mark Frost (I think) lost control throughout season 2 and a lot of it is trash. The producers or whomever wanted it to be more mainstream, it suddenly has all these romance subplots, etc. The beginning and end is amazing though. But I'll probably never rewatch S2 fully ever again. It's a mess.
S3 is Lynch unhinged. It barely even feels like a sequel to the original series, even with some legacy characters... but it's still amazing if you like Lynch. One episode is pretty much Eraserhead 2. 18 episodes of Lynch in full control working with MONEY, it's a fun ride. I have yet to meet anyone who's actually seen this season though lol. Help a brother out.
The Fire Walk With Me movie is good and mostly the serious murder stuff. It is a prequel but was made later and maybe intended for fans already, I'm not sure. It's been awhile.
Dude you've played so many obscure games, Japanese or not, it's gotta be a fact that a hundred things you've seen were influenced by Twin Peaks and it'll be obvious haha.

I'm suddenly interested in Deadly Premonition. You'd be better off watching one of those Youtube videos where all the game's cutscenes are compiled into a "movie". It's not a fun game to play. Even on 360 where it didn't crash constantly, the game design was just awful ass. The writing and cutscenes however, were kinda brilliant. The director should have just made a movie instead of a game. I have beaten Kagero: Deception... it had better gameplay than Deadly Premonition.

I just can't watch a game instead of playing it. In this case, I know everyone pretty much agrees with you in a general sense about the gameplay, but you seem to hate it more than most. I don't mind if it's ends up just tolerable if I love everything else. Apparently the PS3 director's cut makes the combat and stuff easier, too, so it's less annoying to deal with it.
I wonder if Twin Peaks also influenced older games than those. 16-bit era stuff, or some of the PSX games I've played.

I, on the other hand, have a surprisingly high tolerance for jank... although that's generally reserved for NES games.

Yeah the combat wasn't a bother in the PS3 version for me. You'll crack up a bit too with the weird broken back bent over positions the zombies get in along with the awful voice overs, "I don't want to diiiieee" but it's not the same just typing it out. You have to hear it haha.
I really don't think it's as bad as Ex does. It was really just the driving that I thought was appalling. There is a fast travel system, but it was really freaking weird. Something to do with phone calling, or certain times of the day... I don't know, it sucked.
The driving isn't a TON either but there's enough that it'll feel like a chore after a point. But at least I think it had some fun conversations with the main character York and maybe some radio stuff.

I'm the opposite because I have a very low tolerance for NES jank, but things like bad cameras and tank controls really don't bother me at all. I guess it just depends on what type of jank gets to us in a way that makes it feel like it's real bullshit. I do notice bad cameras, and I don't like them, but it's almost never a big deal to me. Also, when it comes to horror games, I always have it in the back of my mind that Ex thinks Silent Hill has bad gameplay, while I personally like it a lot. I'm sure Deadly Premonition's is objectively worse, cause everyone seems critical of it to some degree, but I'm hoping I'll be in the "it's not great but it's alright" camp. It's not like I have access to the game right now, anyway.

I played DP on normal difficulty on Xbox 360. A few people I've talked to that "love" the game played through it on easy. I can tell you fighting those stupid ceiling crawling zombies got to be tough after a while (on normal) along with just being highly repetitive. The driving was just boring and also became highly repetitive... IIRC there wasn't a fast travel option. Maybe the later versions better balance the gameplay or streamline stuff, I don't know. I enjoyed doing investigation stuff and just talking with the NPCs, that part of the game design was fun. But the combat and driving just suck and you do a LOT of that. Also toei know going in this is a ~20 hour long game.
