We got Ex giving his rankings I think three times over My wife often tells me I like to repeat myself. The truth is my brain is just utterly ravaged from years of sleep deprivation. I'd wager it's safe to say you're the only mega-FF7 fan on HRG. But I'm glad you've found a game that inspires such strong reactions for you. With further FF7 remake partitions coming, you've got plenty to look forward to.

Heh, at least you're consistent. You had repeating lists and Sarge was re-echoing his opinions consistently a few times over as well haha. Now, perhaps a little surprising but I also don't want my crazy FF7 post there or my current Cloud avatar to be misleading... I definitely have some thoughts on this game and it'll take a bit to digest again. I'm now pretty much completely confident in saying that the remake is the better game and I still wouldn't crown the original as my number one FF. It's one of my favorites, but still too wacky and experimental in a bajillion ways to consistently be dubbed the straight up best. There are pockets of brilliance to me and some great little arcs here and there. When you really break it down to the basics though, I think that FF7 simply has some excellent characters throughout, great world building in spots (Midgar/Shinra), the Materia system could be its own franchise or sub series, etc. The slow spread out styled approach with the remake(s) now feels like absolutely the best route to me. Much of FF7 feels like dozens of promising blueprints that could be fine tuned into something truly awesome. 90% of the original game is still a blast for me to play though, so not to diminish the classic itself in any way.
The one trophy I can undoubtedly award now would be that Tifa is my #1 favorite FF girl by far. Always loved her and it's pretty much cemented in at this point, such a great character. I like how FF7 kind of toys with the female tropes in general. Aerith is the magic user, yet she's the more endearingly-abrasive, flirty, and mischievous lady in the game. Tifa, who destroys soldiers and robotic scorpions with her bare fists and kicks, is the one who can be shy, gentle, and very caring. I love both in general though, the remake really turned me around on Aerith and I'd say the re-translation made her lovable too. I felt emotions in this replay that I never did years ago.
Great FF female runner ups would probably be: Celes, Rydia, Aerith, Rosa, and Terra for me. Most are pretty good though, honestly the only one I seriously hate is FF8's Rinoa. "I WANT SEIFER" Anyone who hasn't played FF7 or might replay it someday, the Reunion mod and BEACAUSE re-translation gets a Megalixir two thumbs up from me.

You're the Mega-FF12 fan. I couldn't describe those characters to save my life. (and I played at least 40 some hours of FF12). Looking forward to replaying it with the HD version someday.

I definitely thought Fran was awesome. I like a lot of the FFXII characters - I just wish the moment-to-moment gameplay did more for me. I still enjoyed it well enough (I think I gave it a 7.5), but I liked the battle system of FFXIII more. And I'm not sure we'll ever get the old ATB system back.

I'd say for those who don't like FF7, they're probably out of luck with the ongoing future of Final Fantasy right now ... but those people probably abandoned ship long ago anyways.
Will be cool to get your take on FF7R's combat system eventually Sarge. I'd say it feels more like a fusion of FF12-FF13.
While I am in the FF7 fan camp and enjoy the sci-fantasy slant it had, did that aesthetic really need to have a permanent grip on the franchise from then on? I think it would be awesome to get another mainline FF someday that goes back to the basics and is just purely high fantasy again. Or if they want to go the remake route again, I think FF4 would be utterly fascinating to see come to life with the crazy AAA console production Square can dish out when it wants. As long as they remember to add in the substance to that flair though, heh.
But I guess Dragon Quest can give me the fantasy fix now.

Did it really, though? I mean, FFXII feels like a very intentional throwback, and I don't necessarily think of most of FFX as sci-fi (although I've forgotten a lot). And of course you've got FFXIV doing its MMO thing over in the corner. (I've actually heard it's very good, I just don't want to get sucked into an MMORPG.)
Oh, right, and FFIX, a decidedly not-sci-fi take on the series.
But the modern stuff does seem to be leaning hard in that direction, away from the pure fantasy stuff of the past.

I guess it has been back and forth. But yeah, there's just something about 7, 8, 13, and 15, that felt like they got a bigger push in ways. FFX has old sci-fi tech around but yeah, it's got a bit of a strange vibe of its own. Not even sure what you'd call it. I don't recall liking the character designs in FF9 much. I just want FF4, Knight's, castles, dragons, Imp's, caves, etc with the FF7R production.
(a tease from Dissidia or something?)
