Kick Master is indeed pretty darn cool. I debated whether I wanted to shell out for it, but was like... it's Christmas, might as well. It's probably not going to lose much value, if any, going forward. I feel like you and I had very similar mentalities when it came to RPGs, toei. I wanted all the RPGs, but... I have quite a few I bought that I still have never beaten. I agree it's not worth doing it for everything. Still, Faria is one I've wanted for a long time. I'm slowly getting that missing RPG list on NES down, but there's a few that I probably won't (or shouldn't) try to target like Hillsfar or Ultima: Warriors of Destiny. (That last one I hear is a terrible port.)

I've played Kick Master a few times, but never stuck with it long enough to finish. For me it's a 7/10, but I can see why others like the game. It's got nice graphics and an unusual attack system. The best aspect to me is the way the leveling system works, with enemies exploding like pinatas, with varying power-ups that fly out. Except you typically don't have time to grab them all (before they disappear), so you have to make a mad dash for the power-up you really want. Just an extra challenge to the game design that I can't recall seeing in any other action-platformer.

Power-ups popping out like that seemed to be a staple of KID-developed games. G.I. Joe 1/2 have bouncing power-ups that come out, and Low G Man has them pop straight up before falling off screen, just not in triples like Kick Master. (Also, is it KickMaster? Dang it, I need places to be consistent!)

Kick Master may not be as mechanically polished as other NES classics, but it has more 80's 'tude than it knows what to do with. I really like that about it.

it has more 80's 'tude than it knows what to do with I don't really see the '80s aspect (KM released in '92). To me it's more like if Boris Vallejo and Jean-Claude Van Damme made a game together.

I thought I'd try Kick Master again to refresh my memories, and huh... it blows. The kick has no range whatsoever, half the time when you try to hit an enemy you get hit instead. And it comes out slowly, too, so you have to time it weirdly. One of the worst and most finicky attacks in any action platformer out there. Then every single time you kill an enemy, you have to jump to grab one of the three powerups. It's not a mad dash or anything, they explode in the air and go through the floor, so you really just have to pick one and jump. It's a massive drag to have to do this after every single enemy, it slows down the game by half.

Apparently I beat Kick Master last year myself.
I thought I didn't like it enough to finish, so now I'm going to go mad trying to figure out what I'm mixing it up with. I think the player character attacks things with his hair? It was close range like Kick Master in that regard.

That's Kabuki: Quantum Fighter. I like that game quite a bit, but of course I would.

I think the player character attacks things with his hair? Yeah Kabuki Quantum Fighter. Despite it being a worse game than Kick Master, I bothered to beat that one almost exactly a year ago:

That's the one! I was even kind of digging it, until level 3. And that boss was so boring. I think dying at the boss put you back at the beginning of the stage? I remember losing al ton of progress and was like nah, I'm not doing that again.
