I'm going to play the Tom Clancy games regardless, so no need to make them my summer challenge. I should mention only the earlier TC games are really challenging. Around 2008 they started becoming much easier, and are a joke today compared to what they used to be. You can add the original Ghost Recon PC to the "hard as hell" list though. Shouldn't it be called Assault Suits Leynos 2 though? Yes, I was in a hurry and my brain betrayed me and got the two confused. The PS1 game is an SRPG. The Saturn one (Leynos) is all action. All kick your teeth in action. Added the GameCube to my platforms. Go for Viewtiful Joe on Adults difficulty, or F-Zero GX. should we end up collecting all recommendations in one post or something? I figure once everybody decides what they're going to play, I'll edit the OP to reflect the participants' chosen games. do I have to call out which months I want to do which challenge in advance? Whatever works for you man. I'm interested in Normal, Hard & Nightmare modes. Cool. I'll come back later with some ideas when I have more time. Ex, you want to recommend a King's Field?
King's Field IV tends to be the best icebreaker for newcomers. Although it's not on the top tier of the difficulty for FromSoftware FPDCs. If you want to play the hardest games in their FPDC collection, go for Shadow Tower or King's Field III.

I think I'll go for Normal, Hard, and Nightmare, and then try to squeeze in an Easy of my own somewhere in there. Platforms I have access to: Anything I can emulate on a PC, and also a PC Saturn DC PS2/PS1 Xbox 360/Xbox Wii/GC SNES Genesis/Sega CD Genres I usually avoid: CRPGs/WRPGs/SRPGs, FPS, RTS/Strategy, Point 'n Click/Adventure, Rail Shooters, 1v1 Fighters, Puzzle, Racing, Sports As for bonafide classics I have yet to play, there are so many. If its on PC I probably haven't played it. Same goes for a lot of JRPGs, 5th gen games in general (I just played a ton of Final Fantasy at that point), and so on. Honestly, if its not an SNES game, I probably haven't beaten it yet.

Glad to see Dunpeal join the fray. I will get back to you and Toei on some rec's soon. This weekend might be a bit busy for me, but I'll come up with something. BTW I still need some Normal and Hard mode rec's dudes.

There's also Shinobi on PS2. That's brutally hard.
I don't know what I want to do where, or if I feel like going Nightmare Mode yet.
I have access to a lot of systems, and am also willing to emulate, so I'm willing to guess I can play almost anything out there that's retro. And my laptop will still be able to handle older games as well.
Genres I usually avoid/never seem to finish: SRPG, RTS, FPS, Racing, Sports, Puzzle, Simulation, Turn-Based Strategy (i.e. 4X)
There's also shmups, which I actually play a decent number of, but don't finish a lot and tend to save-state/credit-feed a lot of them.

There's also Shinobi on PS2. That's brutally hard. Oh yeah, I'd actually like to play Shinobi. Played it a few years ago but never finished it. There's also shmups, which I actually play a decent number of, but don't finish a lot and tend to save-state/credit-feed a lot of them. Same for me - have you beaten the original R-Type for SMS? That game will let you continue even when you run out of lives and if you die during a boss fight it'll let you restart just before it, so you won't have to go through the whole stage all over again. It's also a very good game.

R-Type is indeed very good, and the checkpoint shmups with continues are kinda nice, since you never have to completely restart, but you can't just cheese your way through, so you end up feeling like you really tackled the game and accomplished something tough, even if it takes you 100 credits.
R-Type Delta is also really good, but its damn tough, probably Nightmare-worthy, especially if shmups aren't your usual genre.

R-Type Delta is a great game but I'm not sure I'd be able to beat it legitimately. Heh, the only other R-Type I feel comfortable playing is R-Type Tactics.
Anyways, after deep reflection I decided my games for June and July are gonna be Viewtiful Joe (Adults difficulty) and Shinobi. August is still up for grabs.

Yeah, I went halfway through the game before giving up for a while... then not coming back. This happens from time to time. And no Battletoads? Aw, that's no fun! (I actually did beat this a while back. It really is brutal. Another ridiculously hard NES game to take on would be Holy Diver.)

I'm interested in Normal, Hard & Nightmare modes. What platforms do you have available (or prefer)? I think I'll go for Normal, Hard, and Nightmare, and then try to squeeze in an Easy of my own somewhere in there. If its on PC I probably haven't played it. I'll offer PC suggestions because you have the least experience there... Easy = Raptor: Call of the Shadows or Warning Forever Normal = Diablo II or AbuseHard = Descent or Solar WindsNightmare = Stargoose or Soldner-X: HimmelssturmerRaptor and Warning Forever should be right up your alley. Diablo II is a classic action-RPG and should satisfy your loot cravings. Abuse is a cult classic action-shooter-platformer. Descent is a fully 3D shmup/FPS hybrid that makes you think in new ways, Solar Winds is a a shmup/RPG hybrid. Stargoose is an obscure very difficult shmup (I played the DOS version), Soldner-X is a balls-bustingly hard shmup with nice graphics.
It'll be interesting to see what the other participants suggest for you. I don't know what I want to do where, or if I feel like going Nightmare Mode yet. When you decide on your modes I'll throw some suggestions your way.
