there is certainly precedent for getting paid for emulation work - Bleem comes to mind immediately Connectix Virtual Game Station was even better, and cost money too. Sony shut VGS down by buying and discontinuing the product from its developers.

Oh, yeah, I very much remember Virtual Game Station. I even used it for a little while. Impressive piece of software for sure.
I'm going to be curious as to future details and MVG's take on it. I have to wonder with them settling so quickly if there's something else we're not aware of yet.

Perhaps so. But it also makes me wonder if there was something else that they didn't want folks diving into. Not sure. Really, really hoping this doesn't set a precedent. We'll have to keep an eye on Ryujinx for sure. Hope they're buttoned down well.

Apparently Citra is another casualty with this decision, but that one will also probably get a fork, and has a lot of contributors that aren't "Tropic Haze LLC".

Since it is open-source, though, work will likely continue through others. Can't stop the internet at least. But yeah, Nintendo always looking like a real evil Empire when they brutalize the little guy like these scenarios. It's very clear there's still a total disinterest on a publisher/executive level to foster games preservation of any sort. They don't give a damn. Maybe other older forms of media have been through this and it was always regular people having to put in the work (and fight) to keep these things documented and preserved
That's at least my whole spin on anything anti-emulation. It's just stupid.

To be clear, I don't think Yuzu was in it for preservation. It was clearly a moneymaking thing for them at this point. Again, not that I think there's anything wrong with making money from emulation, but you've got to know from past history that if you try to emulate a current system for money, you're going to draw legal fire. Especially if you're paywalling builds that play leaked games that haven't even come out yet.
Still, as MVG pointed out, this has happened in the past (UltraHLE), and emulation kept on trucking, and even expanded. I don't think this is a death knell for emulation, but the community will have to get serious if Nintendo starts aiming fire at others. I know I'm willing to throw some money for legal expenses.

try to emulate a current system for money Ultimately this is the brazen thing that lead to the lawsuit. Yet if Nintendo is now going after Citra, maybe it's a moot point. AFAIK 3DS is not a "current system". this has happened in the past (UltraHLE) And before that VGS/Connectix was first sued by Sony, then when that lawsuit failed, acquired by Sony. And emulation kept trucking on. So the real lesson here is... don't try to get paid for emulating current gen systems, I guess?

Probably, ha. Seems like that's the general thread running through all of it.

That's what I'm saying. That website Nintendo sued a few years back was also charging for ROMs. Regular-ass ROMs you could find for free anywhere else, mind you, so it's sad that anyone paid for that. Getting paid off emulation is a no-no, doing current gen is worse. And there's always some collateral damage when it's Nintendo (emuparadise, Citra...) Doesn't matter if the emulator part might possibly be legal, since these guys can't afford to defend that right in court. And charging for ROMs you don't own is definitely illegal.
If you try to run a Citra installer that you already had, it won't work, since it was programmed to always look for the latest update (at least that's for the Nightly builds).
