Yeah, Square Enix was (still is?) the worst about having outsized expectations for their properties, especially some of the big Western titles like Tomb Raider.

I don't expect anybody* to read the whole white paper, but a team created an advanced AI called CRADLE to play RDR2: "Towards General Computer Control: A Multimodal Agent for Red Dead Redemption II as a Case Study"arxiv.org/pdf/2403.03186.pdfOverall CRADLE did well with a few hiccups. *With the exception of Sarge, 'cause you'd probably get a kick outta it.

www.ign.com/articles/japanese-police-arrest-36-year-old-man-on-suspicion-of-tampering-with-pokemon-violet-save-data" Japanese Police Arrest 36-Year-Old Man on Suspicion of Tampering With Pokémon Violet Save Data. Police in Japan have arrested a 36-year-old man on suspicion of selling illegally modified Pokémon save data to customers online — a practice which is banned under the country’s 2019 Unfair Competition Prevention Act. As reported by the Japanese website NHK News, and translated by Automaton, the suspect was apprehended by police on April 9 after a ‘police cyber patrol’ discovered evidence that the individual had used special tools to illegally modify save data for Pokémon Violet in order to change Pokémon move sets." That's the kind of arrest that should make someone pause and say, "What the hell am I even doing with my life?"

"Psst. Hey kid. Wanna buy a modded Pokemon?"
"A modded Pokemon?!"
"Ssh, keep it down. It's got all the best moves. It'll only cost ya a $20 for your first hit. Whaddaya say?"
*police sirens blare in the distance*
"Crap, gotta bail! Good luck, kiddo! I was never here, got that?"

The one thing I notice (in terms of being "off") is the choppiness of the visuals and animation (made worse by that "pause" effect that happens with every hit, presumably to show impact) and a general messiness / clutter that could be an issue when playing. I wonder if you're picking up anything else that I'm not with your experience in games like these.

I wonder if you're picking up anything else that I'm not with your experience in games like these. You nailed it lol. I guess it can be done well sometimes, even the God of War games tend to do this. The most subtle little slow-mo effect per hit that I guess devs think make you "feel" the impact of combat and hitting stuff better, but it's never my preference. I just prefer the smooth as butter precision you get in the Souls/Nioh games or most other Japanese character action titles, Ninja Gaiden Xbox, DMC's, Nier, Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising, etc. It really does feel like I can just watch videos of other stuff in the mix of this genre and tell if the combat will feel good or not.
The other big Chinese games coming up in this vein:
I'm inclined to believe this isn't even real gameplay. Looks kind of pre animated and all. Pretty messy. It's cool to see all those intricate animations, but what exactly is going on gameplay/input wise? lol, maybe the player is going Naruto ninjitsu on the gamepad.
Black Myth: Wukong This one looks maybe the most promising so far and any take on Journey to the West can be extra enticing. But I'll remain skeptical that it's a lot of style over substance until I see more.
Unending Dawn (what a name lol) looks a little more budget compared to these, but yeah...

It really does depend - sometimes, what looks wonky when watching actually feels good in play. But I'm not sure that's the case here.

Xeogred Neither of those two Chinese games are doing it for me. But I'd be interested in seeing some of the better Chinese games. I did beat several of those Taiwanese Genesis RPGs. Brave Battle Saga (which I beat with the fan translation, before it was officially licensed) was legitimately good. The beginning was roughly balanced, though - it takes a few hours before you get other party members, as I recall, and it gets a lot better once there's three of you. Beggar Prince was just ok, but had one particular moment with an absurd leap of logic where I couldn't figure out what to do for the life of me. Turns out you had to return to the end of an old dungeon, with no hint to do so, which is crazy. Legend of Wukong was absolutely horrible, 1/10 garbage. Fengshen Yinjiechuan - I forget the English title they give it - I bought on Steam, and it sucked. It's a SRPG, where every battle after a while has infinitely spawning new enemies, making the battles drag on horribly. So I dropped it. So yeah, compared to the Japanese RPGs on the console, that's not a good average. But that was long ago. I'd still be curious to play those Super A'Can RPGs in English, though. There's gotta be at least one good one.
