I got all the achievements on Steam, had a blast running through it. It's one of my top favorite neo retro games, I like to dub them as such. I posted my list of favorites so far on the last page. Aesthetically it might even be my #1 visually, it is absolutely my kind of authentic 16bit sexiness. I even double dipped for the physical release on the Switch in hopes to co-op it someday with friends.
It's funny how the one midboss in the snow level (I believe, he's a normal sized Terminator like guy), he was patched eventually. Because previously all you had to do was duck when the battle starts and he'd just stand there taking everything without ever being able to hit you.
I wish it had a one life mode. Would have felt exfiltrating pulling that off. I could put a rule on that myself, but having some kind of unlockable or thank you at the end of such a run probably would have motivated me to keep going after hardcore and all haha.

I learned this game has very poor input configuration. You can't remap the direction buttons on your gamepad and no keyboard input is accepted by the game when a gamepad is plugged in I really can't understand how any developer could be okay with that scheme. I'm glad you found a workaround though. I'd like to play this one eventually.

Why would you remap the directional buttons, or have four arms needing to play with both a gamepad and keyboard at the same time?
I played through with the X1 controller myself. But I'm never using that again now that I have a SN30+.

Tried out Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, and it's definitely riffing on DKC, right down to the roll and being able to jump out of it in mid-air. Interestingly, that's not a move that I knew about back in the day, and it still feels quite unnatural to pull off at times - I mean, it feels like I'm going to roll right down a pit! (And I sometimes I do.)

I really dig Impossible Lair's world map, from the little I've seen. I've only briefly started it up myself but as a big DKC fan I'm sure I'll love it. I like the N64 Banjo's but would never say I LOVE them, so I'm not sure I'll ever bother with the first Yooka-Laylee. This one should be way more up my alley.
I didn't really know much about the roll jump myself as a kid, during DKC1 at least. It's pretty natural to me now in these games. Did you like Tropical Freeze? The bonus Kong stages in that one are like straight up kaizo. You absolutely have to be a master of how the game controls to get through those.

I don't like the physics of those. They feel too heavy to me.
I agree with you, though - I'm betting Impossible Lair will be at least good, as compared to the Banjo-inspired first game, which I hear isn't that great.

If you walk away liking Impossible Lair and not Tropical Freeze, that is W.A.C.K ... WACK!

We shall see. The physics don't seem quite so heavy here.
