It's fine, really! We've all got different opinions, and I think we're all able to back them up as well.

Well, I made it to the "16-bit" transition and it only got more like I said. The entire game is just an unending series of platforming trials. It doesn't actually feel like any of the ninja games it's trying to emulate. Another thing I wanted to say before is I really don't like the writing. It's trying very hard to be clever by breaking the fourth wall all the time in the most obvious ways and having random NPCs insult you but it just comes off like all those RPGMaker2000 games teenagers were making in the early '00s. "Lol I'm the mystical guide in this GAME lol hey want a GAME POWERUP you DUMB DUMMY you need it for this LEVEL you tard LMAO". It's awful. Also, whoever thought having some mascot following you around just to diss you when you fail was a good idea is obviously some kind of sadomasochist.
Anyway, I'm done for real this time. I was vaguely hoping the 16-bit portion would play more like a 16-bit game, but it's just more of the same with slightly better graphics.

It took things a little too far with the self referential wink-wink nod-nod stuff.

I don't feel like The Messenger ever marketed itself like it was some spiritual successor to Ninja Gaiden or anything. To me it always looked like it's own neo-retro kind of thing. I didn't really go in trying to compare it to other stuff. I dug the platforming focus a lot though, but that's certainly a preference.
Not hard to imagine the writing can be hit or miss.
I'd recommend you guys try Blazing Chrome, but I can't remember if you two were Contra fans or not. Either way that game to me feels more like legit Genesis/SNES era material, outside of the more technically advanced music.

XeogredI like Blazing Chrome a lot! I haven't beat it yet, but I played through some stages and loved every second of it.

Well, I liked Retro City Rampage too, so... maybe my taste is in question.
Blazing Chrome was good, indeed. Definitely a good play for Contra fans, especially Hard Corps.

Nice little discovery today!
Crypt Stalker:
Looks like a great mix of Mega Man and Castlevania. Went ahead and bought it for that tiny price. $3!

Someone recently released an interesting C64 game: frodewin.itch.io/survival-messenger-adventure"Survival Messenger Adventure
You are stranded on an unknown island and you find a mobile phone where strangers, who are more or less attentive, give you advice via instant chat. The game is an interactive fiction game for the Commodore 64. It also runs well on an emulator, for example on the VICE emulator, which is available for several systems. The game contains more than 50 hand-pixeled graphics and game music matching the scenery. It comes with a fastloader that works in the emulator, but also supports supporting VC 1541, Ultimate, and SD2IEC on real hardware. The game is non-linear and you can end your time on the island using multiple different solutions. There are at least 3 solutions."
