Am I the only person here who beat the GBC adaptation of Quest instead of the OG N64 game? It wasn't great.
The PSX is honestly a beast. I was faithful to Sega in that generation, and the Saturn has some great games, but they didn't have the third parties. Sony really just pulled a coup with the PSX and made itself king inside just a few years, after basically just dabbling in games publishing for a short while. There's no denying that library. I too have found several great games in the past few years. It's got ever genre covered. The PS2 is even more dominant to its generation, I'd say, despite having one more competitor.

The PS1, PS2, and PS4 all have utterly insane libraries. Cumulatively an embarrassment of riches for gamers.

Yeah, agreed, PS1, PS2, PS4 all are insane. As far as Majora's Mask goes, I'll admit that I didn't love it. I still think it's good, it's just the structural stuff isn't quite what I want from a Zelda. But it's fantastic in its tone, and I think at some point I will revisit the N64 version as opposed to the 3DS remake, which I understand also messed around with how much time you get per loop. I absolutely understand why folks love it, even if it isn't quite for me. But Link's Awakening? Favorite Zelda right there. Only A Link to the Past challenges it on the 2D side, and Twilight Princess from the 3D entries. I think I had a tier list myself? Lemme see what I've got... there it be. And yes, I bumped up the 3DS version of Ocarina - the improvements to the engine really let me enjoy the game a lot more than my original N64 run.

Anything with color-based puzzles makes me rage so Link's Awakening DX gets points off.

And now that you mention it, toei, Shiren on N64 absolutely DOES look like a b-tier Saturn game! Maybe that's why the visuals don't bother me, since I find that Saturn "look" nostalgic. I'm pretty much in the same boat, bonesnapdeez - I like the Resident Evil Remake and RE4, and that's about it - I don't really care for the low poly horror games on PS1 (though Silent Hill 2 on PS2 has always intrigued me, always meant to give that one a shot). I'm a fan of some non-RPG stuff on the PS1 and Saturn (Klonoa is great, and I've always had a soft spot for the Bug! games, for example), but I mostly boot those systems up to play RPGs, which both of them have some great examples of. The N64, much as I love it... does not, Ogre Battle 64 aside. A friend of mine to this day swears by Aidyn Chronicles, but I watched him play that when we were kids and thought it was awful and never wanted it lol. I watched him play Harvest Moon 64 and Ogre Battle 64 so much I eventually got both of those, but even he couldn't convince me to get Aidyn Chronicles lol. And yeah, the Link's Awakening color dungeon was terrible. I tried to convince myself when I was a kid that Quest 64 was sort of like an action-y Shining Force, in that you take turns moving your guy around and attacking enemies, but it's just not strategic enough to even come close, never mind being so slow paced and without story of any consequence. I'd rent it occasionally and try to get into it, but I always burn out on it pretty quickly. The platformers on N64 remain some of my favorites of all time though - the obvious one is Mario 64, but Banjo-Kazooie might be even better (blasphemy, I know, but I really like how that game is designed). Don't get me wrong though, Mario 64 is a masterpiece. I've always loved Conker's Bad Fur Day, even if a lot of its humor and references haven't aged well/I've grown out of some of it (the Great Mighty Poo used to be the funniest thing in the world, now it's quaintly amusing but not laugh out loud funny anymore, alas). Still, I liked the multiplayer capture the flag in Conker as well, and my sister and I played that a lot, even if the framerate was abysmal sometimes. Perfect Dark > Goldeneye, which was the case at the time of its release, and remains so now. The framerate had issues even with the expansion pack, but the single player levels were fun, the multiplayer was a blast (laptop gun turrets blew my mind in 2000! We always had those on). Goldeneye is good, but once PD came out there was no going back for me.

Perfect Dark was great. I used to watch my brother play it a ton. The laptop gun was awesome for sure.

Silent Hill 2 and 3 especially also hold up shockingly well. I played and loved Silent Hill 1 a handful of years ago myself but I do kind of wish it was actually pushed back and released on the PS2. There's also Metal Gear Solid... still one I go back to a lot.
Heck yeah, was definitely more in the Perfect Dark camp myself. Played both to death though.

I freely admit it's some sort of problem with me, but outside of the plot, I don't enjoy playing the Metal Gear games at all. I cannot stand sneaking around as a gameplay mechanic. I watched my college roommate play through MGS1 and the Gamecube "remake" of it, though, and had a good time. I find the series fascinating, I just don't like playing it.
How about Resident Evil 2 on N64? lol I assume the audio, at least, is compressed to heck so it's not worth playing compared to the PS1 version...

I've been thinking of finally running through N64 RE2 myself soon since I'm on a kick with the console lately. I've seen some videos over the years break down how the devs pulled some wizardry to get it on a cartridge, it even has some of the CGI cutscenes from what I've seen (just squeezed down to a tiny resolution haha). But other than being a fascinating technical achievement, I'm not sure if this version is anything special over the others. But I can usually beat it in a few hours at this point so it's fun to find a replay excuse.
We keep trying to get Sarge to play through it in full... I can see how the inventory limit is intense for some people. But RE2 is definitely more action oriented over the first, yet it still retains a nice balance with great level design and atmosphere. The Remake was another 10/10 for me, so I'm pretty spoiled with two basically perfect versions of one of my favorite games. The first REmake is probably my #1 though. Overall one of my favorite franchises by a long shot. I don't even care for "zombies" and such much, but RE is full of fun sci-fi camp and monsters, along with a lot of cool iconic characters.

I did not enjoy the original RE1 on PS1 (though I enjoyed REmake on GC). When I played RE1 PS1 I thought it was a crappier Alone in the Dark. So it was RE2 on PS1 that got me into the RE series. RE2 is definitively more action-adventure oriented (and better all around) than its predecessor was. I do think Sarge would enjoy RE2 more than he did REmake. IIRC Sarge played through and enjoyed RE4, and RE4 is an evolution of RE2 spiritually. And also to Kazin, if you've not played RE2 before, yeah give it a try man. While we're on the RE subject, I'll list all the RE games I've beaten and what platform I beat them on. From most enjoyed to least enjoyed: Resident Evil 4 (PS2) Resident Evil 5 (360) Resident Evil: Revelations (3DS) Resident Evil 2 (PS1) Resident Evil (GC) Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles (Wii) Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles (Wii) Resident Evil 6 (360) Resident Evil: Dead Aim (PS2) Resident Evil Survivor (PS2) Resident Evil Survivor 2 – Code: Veronica (PS2)
