I wonder if it's something modders could fix. I hope so. Luckily 90% of the Wii U's games have been ported to Switch, and as you said, emulation exists for the rest. Emulation truly is the savior of video game history.

I was a big WiiU defender for the few killer first party games. But it's telling I can't feel bothered to unbox mine to check on it. Does Dolphin do WiiU? I've seen people play modded Xenoblade X with QOL changes like run speed, etc...
Ex: I can't help but chuckle a bit seeing you replacing your WiiU library with Switch ports yourself now. But that was always one of my arguments in favor of the Switch. It has those good games and then thousand more, lol. And not saying I totally love the Switch or anything but it seriously did make the WiiU's existence pretty moot.
Hate to see dying tech/software though, so it's still a bummer. I still like the WiiU Pro Controller more than the Switch's. And I think there's some decent dongles for it now to use on PC... maybe even the Switch?

seeing you replacing your WiiU library with Switch ports yourself now So far I'm only buying the ports that include new additional content. Don't see myself buying the 1:1 ports though.

The last piece to the puzzle for me is Twilight Princess HD. That was such a great remaster, maybe not as QOL changing as Wind Waker HD (which upgraded and average Zelda to an okay one for me )... but yeah, I love Twilight Princess and would triple dip if it got ported yet again.
I played and beat Devil's Third. So I'm good on the WiiU oddball exclusives.

Cemu is easily the most capable Wii U emulator at the present time, but it's pretty demanding and depending on title, the emulation can be a little rough. That said, it's a very impressive piece of kit, and it's not so demanding that you can't run it on Steam Deck, although it's probably tied with RPCS3 as the most demanding emulator on Steam Deck ... with the huge battery drain to match. All the same it's rather amazing that it runs on the platform at all.

Mine booted, although I think I've at least powered it up within the year. This does tell me that it's time to mod, though. If you get a NAND backup, there are ways to recover the system.

I am currently backing up the NAND on my system. Will go ahead and install Tiramisu, and hopefully get the Homebrew Store running as well. Probably all I'll do tonight, though. I just want to see this thing backed up.
EDIT: It's sooooo sloooooow. 32GB to back up...
EDIT 2: And done. Backing up from SD card to HDD now, using 7-Zip but it doesn't look like it's really compressing. Still might be worth doing it that way as I think there's some error recovery if a bit or two goes bad. Also got Tiramisu installed, but I'm not autobooting it. The system also decided to force me to update before I could block them... but that's not a big deal. Anyway, I can launch into the Tiramisu environment via the Health and Safety app. No idea how to get games running on here, and honestly that wasn't my goal in the first place. Although running them from a USB drive would be awfully convenient.
Oh, and I did finally figure out how to do stuff on the PS3. PKGi works, but there are a lot of PS3 games that were never on PSN, so you have to use something like Webman MOD instead. I thought it did decryption if you have the keys, but I couldn't get it to work. But the tutorial for running stuff in RCPS3 also works to get a decrypted ISO for Webman, so I finally managed to test a game out that way, 3D Dot Game Heroes. (Honestly, I'd rather dump my own disc, but dead-for-now Blu-Ray drive. Oh well.)
Guess the 3DS is the next system on the docket while I'm on a modding rampage...
