It does feel like we're nearing the end of the Switch's life though. I do kinda wonder if Nintendo's holding onto Breath of the Wild 2, Metroid Prime 4, and the next 3D Mario as launch titles for the Switch 2. I do still buy a lot of Switch games, but they're mainly physical releases of retro-styled modern games on Switch, like Panzer Paladin, Blazing Chrome, Fight N' Rage, Ninja Saviors, TMNT Shredder's Revenge, etc. I can see the appeal of playing those kind of games on Switch. I'd be happy to play those on the Lite. That's not a small number. But it's still relatively niche compare to the 111 million standard Switch sales (as of August 2022). What that tells me, is that some folks do care about the portable aspect, but the majority want the console experience.

The Wii U was fantastic for me, though, so I knew I was getting in early on this one. Plus, the hybrid format appealed, even if I haven't used it quite as I envisioned.
I think BotW2 is coming, but it wouldn't at all surprise me if it ends up a dual-system release like BotW was.
There are other Shantae games on Switch (actually, I think they might all be on there now), so you can kinda go nuts with the series. I liked Pirate's Curse the most. Half-Genie Hero was fun, even if it's less Metroidvania, which is what Pirate's Curse and Seven Sirens are. Risky's Revenge was originally a DSiWare exclusive, and it hews closely to something like Monster World IV. And the original... I'd put in a sort of Simon's Quest bucket - it's quite wide open and takes a lot of time to get your bearings, but you eventually get there and, at least for me, hooks you.

But the Switch 2 version will have higher resolution and 60fps as opposed to 30fps. Noted and thanks for the run down on the series. You are the only Shantae fan I know personally. I wonder why this series isn't more popular with other retro gamers. Seems like it would be.

I beat Shovel Knight and Pirate's Curse on the WiiU myself. Had a few random digital games on that. Pirate's Curse was alright.
Seems like since the GC/Wii era, Zelda drops on two systems every time... so yeah I'm sure the cycle will repeat.
Maybe I'll love BoTW again another time around but I feel like I've kind of been "saving my energy" for the sequel. I was kind of bummed to read to get the motorcycle DLC and stuff, it takes a bit of work actually. If I could have the bonus stuff out of the gate with the Switch version I'd be more inclined to replay it perhaps.
Just hit 140 hours in XB3 by the way. BoTW ain't no match for this one... (well actually nothing is? It's a Xeo World Record and the TIME just keeps adding up, lol)

Ex - Picross games have come a long way from the GB and SNES editions. Back then you had to count everything perfectly as anything marked wrong was a straight time ping.
New ones now you can turn off all the hints...etc, but also mark the wrong squares. It happens and then you have to work your way out to fix it. None of the games are based off of time to pass now so its a puzzle game at your pleasure. Besides the regular Picross mode, Mega Picross has been added and Color. I personally really enjoy the Mega but always 100% these games.
Fallen a little behind on the Switch series (Own them all but they are up to 7 or 8 now). Great value though for your money. $10 for 40+ hour of gameplay if you enjoy the puzzle aspect.

Pirate's Curse was alright. "Alright" was the same gist I got from the GBC Shantae. That's the only entry I've played (not finished) so far. I'm willing to nab the rest on PS4 or Switch though, depending on where the best prices are. Gotta be something special about these for the Lord of Platformers to care about them. The mainline 3D Zeldas, yeah. What's left to do in the game after 140 hours? Are you backtracking to all possible little sidequests? Picross games have come a long way from the GB and SNES editions. I don't doubt it. For me it's the 3D Picross entry that seem the most interesting: Did you ever play that one?

The DS game is pretty good and Round 2 on the 3DS really tightens the experience and is fantastic. In the DS game you have to clear all the Os (blocks you want to delete) where in Round 2 you can mark a block and O and then when you mark all the Xs you can hit a button to blow up all the Os. It's not a big deal on the smaller puzzles but you will notice it for bigger ones

The games after the GBC original are a lot more refined, although I suspect with your tastes, they will still hit that WayForward good-to-very-good range. I'm mostly like that with the series, myself, with most of them falling into a 7.5 - 8.5 range.

>> I do care about that, if it affects internet speed. Insofar as downloads go.
I don't play online and I haven't had any serious wifi issues, but I've learned wifi is very situational. Downloads are normal for me.
>> Yes OLED is outstanding. I'm planning to get a 4K HDTV for my dork cave next year, I may very well get an OLED. Probably an LG or Samsung. Right now in there I'm using an LCD Samsung from like ten years ago. It still looks great, but it's no OLED.
I have a last gen Plasma (1080p) and I greatly prefer it over modern LED. Even over the 4K screens simply because contrast is king for me. That is why the first gen Switch was always console mode, OLED Switch is almost always handled, and why I really want the PSP on the big screen.
>> Looks like all the Switch owners in this thread got a Switch very early on, near release window. That shows a lot of faith in Nintendo, given that the Wii U was kind of a dud.
I really like my Wii U, especially since my kids were the perfect age for "helping me" with the mobile screen while I play on jumbotron. If anyone has young kids that are just learning touchscreen, the New Super Mario on the Wii U is a blast. As for a dud, I can't argue against that with the sales numbers.
>> Most people who own a Switch treat it as their primary console. Seems a fair amount of responders don't have a PS4 or XBO.
Not trying to contradict, but I have a few games for the PS4 (Guilty Gear always brings a smile.) Since the PS4 restored my faith in Sony I will probably get a PS5 when things become more reasonable.
>> Seems many Switch owners bought a lot of games early on for the platform, but their Switch purchases slowed since. I'm assuming this has to do with Nintendo not releasing many first party exclusives for Switch in a while.
Sounds reasonable. While I enjoyed BotW, it wasn't that great. I ended up not liking Mario Odyssey that much either. I probably should try Metroid Dread, but I'm a little disenchanted right now.
>> I do kinda wonder if Nintendo's holding onto Breath of the Wild 2, Metroid Prime 4, and the next 3D Mario as launch titles for the Switch 2.
It seems everyone just wants a Switch Pro. If that is the direction, Nintendo would be wise to make sure it can do 4K with ray tracing--which is going to take some time to do those two things and keep the experience reasonable in portable mode.

I think a lot of us have a PS4, too. Honestly, the best combo for the last generation was PS4 + Switch. XB1 never really gave me enough reasons to bite. That might be different with the XSX, though - I may actually get one of those. But it will likely come after a PS5, which also hasn't convinced me that I really need one yet.
I honestly don't know how feasible 4K and raytracing is going to be in that sort of package. Not even the PS5 has many games that do full 4K with raytracing. If they do it, I suspect it will be something of a variable mode - 1080p30 with raytracing, or 4K30 without. Perhaps. Of course, if enough time passes... they may very well hit that target. Will be interesting to see how much longer the Switch train keeps chugging.
